Description:

At the request of County officials, Mastiffs to Mutts took in 13 of 18 Bullmastiffs from the property of a deceased breeder in Kentucky. They were all severely neglected; emaciated and in poor health.

All 13 are learning to live inside a home, sleep on a soft bed, receive regular, quality meals, play and receive human affection. All are good with other dogs.

Kirby and Katie came to us from a neglect situation. In addition to being emaciated, they were infested with fleas and ticks. Human contact had been minimal, if at all. They were very frightened dogs when they came to the rescue. Everything was new and terrifying for them. They have been with the rescue 2 1/2 months now and are adjusting to their new world. Kirby is a sweet, lovable, silly and cuddly pup. He loves to sleep on the sofa (snores!) and do zoomies around the room. He knows his name, will sit on command and is completely housebroken and crate trained. He gets along well with dogs and even gets the older ones to play. Katie is still very frightened of anything new but does so much better when she is with Kirby. They were initially placed in separate foster homes but it was noticed that Katie was withdrawn and extremely anxious. Katie is more confident around Kirby and is beginning to come out of her shell. She also likes to lie on the sofa and will play with toys. She watches Kirby do his zoomies and it’s evident she just wants to participate but is not yet brave enough. Kirby and Katie have a close relationship so they are being placed up for adoption as a bonded pair. They both have sweet, calm personalities and would love to be an addition to your home. They are still anxious in new situations so will need time to adjust. Katie is much more reserved.

Likes: They love food so can be trained using treats as a motivator; like stuffed animal toys but will pull the stuffing out; love peanut butter; like to have their ears pet.

Dislikes: Loud noises and quick movements. They are still anxious in new situations. Don’t like to be left out in the yard too long.

Personality: Very laid back, love to be pet and cuddle. Kirby believes he is a lap dog! Generous with kisses.

Temperament: Very good at the Vets though not crazy about having their nails trimmed. Tolerate a bath. Rarely bark. Never growl.

Energy level: Two couch potatoes! They would benefit from several walks a day.

Favorite activities: Eating, sleeping, playing with toys

Good with cats, dogs, and kids (over 6)?: Gets along well with dogs and kids over the age of six. Have not been introduced to a cat.

Not good with:  Anxious in new situations. Need to have patience with them as the world is scary for them.

Housetrained: Yes

Crate trained: Yes. They sleep in the same crate through the night.

Requires a fenced yard (physical fence and/or invisible fence)? Would do best with a fenced in yard. Kirby and Katie are not candidates for an invisible/underground fence. Both need leash training.

Challenges: They are frightened by new situations and will need extra time to adjust. They respond to calmness

Any Medical issues? Ehrlichia positive, anaplasmosis positive. They were treated with doxycycline for this. They were treated for parasites and are currently on nexgard and heartgard. Their vaccinations are up to date. They are both microchipped.

What would be the best kind of home? They will do best in a calm environment. They will need time to adjust to their new home. Kirby needs a slow feed dish. Not food possessive. When adjusted to their new home, they will benefit from an obedience class.

Kirby and Katie are being fostered in Eagleville, PA.

Puppy Adoption Policy:

To ensure proper house training and socialization, puppies will only be adopted to homes where an adult will not be away more than an hour per day, per month of age of the puppy, up to 6 months.

Certain large-breed dogs should not be sterilized prior to 12 - 18 months of age. If you adopt an intact puppy, you will sign an adoption contract agreeing to have the dog sterilized at your expense at the time your veterinarian recommends. If the puppy is not sterilized as required, Mastiffs To Mutts Rescue reserves the right to claim legal ownership of the dog.
