Description:
Kiro is a very sweet, lovable, affectionate 1-year-old mastiff. He’s housetrained, sleeps through the night and is well-behaved when left alone in the house. Barks at the door to go out. He’s goofy and fun, loves to play tug-of-war and loves to snuggle on the couch. Loves grown-ups, kids and other dogs. Unknown how he is with cats. Came to us from a shelter in Harford County, MD because his owners could no longer care for him.
Likes: Snuggling and getting affection. Toys and playing tug-of-war with his foster brother dog or his foster parents. Naps on the couch. Bones and treats. Being outside. Watching out the window at what’s going on outdoors.
Dislikes: Being ignored when he thinks you should be paying attention to him. He sometimes whines when no one wants to play with him.
Personality: Very sweet and affectionate. Goofy, funny and playful. Known to fall asleep with a bone hanging out of his mouth, trips over his own feet, sometimes sleeps with body on couch & head on the floor…
Temperament: Very tolerant and sweet. Will let you inspect his ears, feet and mouth with no objection. Will let you remove food, bones or treats. Well behaved and never chews on things he’s not supposed to.
Energy level: Moderate. He’s a young dog, so he likes to play. But also naps often throughout the day and sleeps well through the night.
Favorite activity: Playing with his foster brother dog. Getting attention, being petted and loved.
Good with: People, including strangers and kids over 6. Great with other dogs – wants to play but takes cues if the other dog doesn’t want to engage. Unknown how he is with cats.
Housetrained: Kiro is housetrained and barks at the door to go out. There were some accidents in the first week of joining his foster home (which is normal during the decompression period), but has not has any accidents since.
Crate trained: Kiro has a crate available to him and likes to sleep in it. It has not been necessary to confine him to the crate since he’s been with his foster family.
Challenges: Sometimes play can get rowdy, bumping into furniture, etc. When he first joined his foster home, the play with his foster brother dog often devolved into humping behavior, but after about 10 days and with correction and reminders, the behavior stopped. Kiro is only a year old, so he is still learning his manners, for ex: sometimes will mouth when he’s playing but responds well when verbally corrected. Still needs to learn to walk nicely on a leash w/out pulling.
Medical issues: Kiro’s lower jaw is shorter than his upper jaw, which is formally known as mandibular brachygnathism and also known as “parrot mouth,” all of which means he has an overbite. This does not appear to cause him any difficulty eating or playing and he doesn’t appear to be in any discomfort. The only time it has been noticeable is if he drops a treat on the floor, it’s difficult for him to pick it up off the flat surface. Kiro also previously had hip surgery and he has completed recovered from
What would be the best kind of home: Kiro would do well in a home with another dog willing to play with him, and/or people who are willing to play with him but the yard must be fenced in. He would also do well in a home with a yard where he can freely roam and play. He would do best with a family willing to give him lots of love and affection.
